Google is fined $5 billion for its illegal restrictions

Android warning

This could have great implications for Google's mobile ad revenue, which constitutes more than 50 percent of the company's net digital ad revenue, according to The Verge.

A third antitrust case against Google is also still open in the European Union, which alleges the tech giant holds dominance in online advertising via its Adsense tool.

U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, U.S., July 18, 2018.

The president tweeted: "I told you so!"

The impending decision from the European Union watchdog has come to pass: Google has been fined a record €4.3 billion ($5.1 billion) for abusing the Android operating system's dominance in the smartphone market, the largest fine imposed on a company in European Union history. "They truly have taken advantage of the USA, but not for long!"

GettySundar Pichai hinted the'free distribution of Android could be disrupted

EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said in a press release on Wednesday that the case is about the following three restrictions that Google has foisted on Android device manufacturers and network operators - practices that ensure that Android device searches wind up going to Google's search engine, the European Commission claims.

The EU wants Google to stop preloading its Chrome browser and its search engine to Android. The investigation began in 2015, pre-dating Trump's presidency by more than a year, and is not immediately relevant to US-EU trade.

His comments come amid escalating tension between the European Union and the Trump administration. A journalist quoted Trump, who told European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at the G7 meeting last month: "Your tax lady really hates the USA". "I do work with tax and I am a woman so that is 100% correct", she said, but added: "I very much like the USA".

And it comes after Mr Trump last week described Brussels as "a foe".

The president is due to conduct crunch talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at the White House next week, where he could choose to bring up the Google fine again.
