Greyhound to discontinue service in Western Canada

Greyhound announced Monday they would shut down service in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia starting October 31.

She pointed to Vancouver Island, where the company Tofino Bus stepped up in 2013 to replace Greyhound on a route to Campbell River and Courtenay, and again this year when Greyhound cancelled services from Victoria and Duncan. Trevena said she'll be speaking with her provincial counterparts in other affected provinces, and that it may be time for Ottawa to step in.

The Grande Prairie depot is located at 9918 - 121st Avenue. "So we'll be monitoring that situation quite closely and seeing if there's any alternatives that we might be able to assist with".

"This decision is regretful and we sympathize with the fact that many small towns are going to lose service", Greyhound Canada senior vice-president Stuart Kendrick told The Canadian Press. She thinks the cancellation of bus service will cause an increase in traffic.

In a background document, the company said its executives had outlined concerns about its declining business in meetings with the ministry in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Local shipping company, Willy's Trucking, is now handling Greyhound freight.

Rick Hollingworth owns a construction company in Valleyview, Alta., that employs 25 to 30 people.

In retrospect, of course Greyhound wasn't interested in returning to a central location - not when its top brass knew the company's presence in all Western Canada was fast ending.

"A lot of our employees that don't live in Valleyview - like they lived in maybe in Calgary or Red Deer".

That said, there is government obligation to ensure ALL Canadians can travel from their homes to urban centres for medical care and to access other essential services.

The national group that advocates for Indigenous women and girls is "deeply concerned" by the cancellation of Greyhound bus service to rural communities.

He points out that people in many rural communities use Greyhound to get around.

"If nothing is done collectively, if we don't sit at a round table with the stakeholders over the next 60 days, it's going to be one mess", he said.

Vince Li, who now goes by the name Will Baker, beheaded and cannibalized a fellow passenger, 22-year-old Tim McLean, on a Greyhound bus that was bound for Winnipeg on July 30, 2008.

"We're absolutely continuing to service our current customers and we look forward to servicing our future customers as well", he said.
