Donald Trump at Turnberry during the 2016 Presidential race

A statement on the U.S. embassy website warns USA citizens to "be aware of your surroundings (and) exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings that may become violent".

It will be a working visit, which will see him have meetings with the Prime Minister, British business leaders and the Queen.

A leaflet for a protest against Donald Trump is seen amongst Labour party flags at the Solidarity Tent at Labour Live, White Hart Lane, Tottenham on June 16, 2018 in London, England.

But it's not simply the protesters, who are expected to dog Mr. Trump throughout his visit, including his weekend in Scotland, but his fraught relationship with political leaders accustomed to harmonious exchanges with US leaders, a tradition of unity that goes back at least to the vital World War II partnership of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

He will largely be avoiding London, where a mass demonstration is planned and where the "Trump Baby" balloon will be flown above Westminster.

"Give us your tired and your oppressed and we'll divide you from your children", he said of Trump's policies.

As well as in London, protests are expected to take place in Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds, Cambridge and Cardiff after Trump arrives here on Thursday.

In the Tuesday memo, the U.S. Embassy in London alerted citizens to the "numerous demonstrations" that could "attract large crowds" that may be less than agreeable toward Americans.

Mr Smyth, who is originally from Ireland, said Trump fans had been given a bad rap, and there had been lots of support for the pub's temporary renaming.

The petition against Trump claimed an official state visit would be embarrassing for the Queen. Still, lawmakers had no qualms about publicly calling Trump a demagogue and a fool.

He added it seemed as if the United Kingdom was "getting at least partially involved back with the European Union".

Later in the day, Mr Trump will travel to Blenheim Palace, the 18th-century stately home where Britain's World War II leader Winston Churchill was born and spent most of his childhood.

Mrs May will be looking to improve her often publicly strained relationship with the United States president as she pushes for a post-Brexit trade deal with America. "The Prime Minister has taken the right decision to treat Donald Trump with the respect his office deserves", it said on Thursday.

Thousands of protesters are set to line the streets to demonstrate against Donald Trump's visit as the US President landed in Britain.

Mr Trump will instead be ensconced at Windsor Castle, west of London on Friday when a blimp tethered next to the Houses of Parliament. These will focus on relations with Russian Federation, trade, Brexit and the Middle East.

As part of the visit, Mrs Trump will meet veterans and schoolchildren in London on Friday, accompanied by the PM's husband Philip May.
