Isner reaches Wimbledon semi-finals after victory over Raonic

Wimbledon

John Isner of the US leaves the court after being defeated by Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the men's semifinal match at Wimbledon on Friday.

When it was all done and dusted, there were no wild roars, no fist pumping and no raised arms in celebration - all Anderson had left in him was to give Isner a sympathetic hug after he came out on top in the second longest match ever contested at the All England Club.

He faced his friend and old college foe Kevin Anderson in the semifinals Friday, where he lost in a game that lasted more than six hours.

Kevin Anderson's Wimbledon dream is alive and well after an extraordinary five-set win to the US' John Isner to reach Sunday's final.

The 33-year-old won a near three-hour long final set to become the first South African Wimbledon men's singles finalist since Brian Norton in 1921, prevailing 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 26-24.

In the fourth set, Anderson broke Isner's serve twice to win it 6-4. Isner took the second set tiebreaker 7-6 (5), punctuating it with an ace.

That inconsistency was eliminated in an absorbing final set before Anderson produced a moment of magic.

That service hold - helped by a 129 miles per hour (207.6km/h) second serve - took the American to 100 service games unbroken at this Wimbledon.

He couldn´t capitalise, however, and was broken straight back before Isner claimed the ensuing tiebreak having saved two set points. The two went back and forth all the way to 12-all, essentially playing a full sixth and seventh set.

On the most crucial point of the match, Anderson recovered after a fall and hit a lefty forehand to go up 0-30 while Isner was serving at 24-24.

Nadal, 32, is back in the semi-finals at Wimbledon for the first time since 2011 when he finished runner-up to Djokovic. For us to be out there for that length of time.
