Joaquin Phoenix’s darker, grittier Joker movie officially in the works

It’s official: Joaquin Phoenix to play The Joker in new origin film

The film is co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver (8 Mile).

Studio bosses describe the plotline as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society (that) is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".

Warner Bros has officially given the green light for a standalone Joker movie, with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. A purportedly leaked casting call has the future crime boss caring for his bedridden mother contributing to his eventual complete mental breakdown and descent into the most infamous supervillain Gotham City has ever known. Under new leadership, Warner Bros.is reportedly moving away from announcing a slew of superhero release dates far in advance, which some thought crippled the launch of the DCEU with rushed productions.

The Joker is more than Batman's arch nemesis. Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger - who won an Oscar for his take in "The Dark Knight" - are among the many actors to bring the character to life.

Phoenix's Joker however will be a separate standalone interpretation on the character, which isn't connected to the DC universe depicted in Justice League and Suicide Squad. The actor was dealt a poor script in Suicide Squad and wasn't given a chance to properly shine. Even though this Joker pic is happening, Warner Bros.is still developing another one with Jared Leto in the role.
