Johnson and Davis resignations 'matters for Theresa May'

Morning Editorial Who dares walks

Earlier on Monday, Ireland's Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said that the focus of the Irish government is on Mrs May's engagement with the European Union and dismissed suggestions that Mr Davis' exit from the cabinet will throw the Prime Minister's latest plan into disarray.

Downing Street confirmed on Monday morning that the PM has appointed 44-year-old housing minister Dominic Raab as the new Brexit Secretary following Davis' resignation on Sunday evening.

"The government now has a song to sing", he said.

A two-year negotiating window closes in March 2019.

"The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work", said a statement from Prime Minister Theresa May.

He is replaced at Health and Social Care by Culture Secretary Matt Hancock, who will in turn be succeeded by Attorney General Jeremy Wright.

However, Mr Davis has said that he is not seeking to trigger a coup to remove the Prime Minister, and Downing Street insiders indicated that he was seen as doing "the honourable thing" in light of Mrs May's announcement that the doctrine of strict collective responsibility was being reimposed on Brexit. The mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations.

In her reply Mrs May said she was sorry, and "a little surprised", at his decision but that if he could not support the Government's position, "it is right that you should step down".

While some Labour lawmakers might be tempted to vote for a Brexit that kept the United Kingdom inside the EU's customs union, they too were clear that the prime minister's proposals didn't go almost far enough.

May said that Britain would not look to extend Article 50, the notice of intention to leave the European Union, and that British people wanted the government to deliver Brexit rather than voting again on the deal.

Political uncertainty in Britain makes the possibility of a no-deal Brexit seem far more likely in the eyes of Brussels bureaucrats.

In a two-page letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, the leading Brexit supporter said that while he initially accepted the government's proposal, it now "sticks in the throat".

The former home secretary Amber Rudd accused Mr Johnson of "backseat driving" in the Brexit negotiations in September past year.

In a strongly worded resignation letter, he warned that the current Brexit plan meant Britain was "truly headed for the status of colony" and accused the prime minister of "sending our vanguard into battle with the white flags fluttering above them".

Davis did not urge other ministers to resign, saying he was in a unique position because the Brexit secretary's job is to sell the government's policy.

"We negotiate with the negotiators", he said.

Under Conservative Party rules, a confidence vote in a leader can be triggered if 15 percent of Conservative lawmakers - now 48 - write a letter requesting one.
