LAPD: Armed Suspect Barricaded With Hostages Inside Trader Joe’s

Police name murder suspect in Los Angeles store hostage standoffMore

Police identified the suspect as a man about 28 years old, who surrendered three hours after barricading himself inside the store where other people had been trapped.

Details on how the woman died inside the store were not immediately known.

Investigators believe the unidentified suspect, in his late teens, shot his grandmother and girlfriend around 1.30 pm local time (2 am Indian Standard Time on Sunday) and then fled in vehicle, AP reported quoting Los Angeles police spokesperson Sergeant Barry Montgomery.

"That suspect fled the location in his grandmother's vehicle, taking that female victim with him", and eventually entered a Trader Joe's supermarket following an "officer involved shooting", he said.

The chase ended outside the Trader Joe's after the suspect crashed into a pole. During the chase, he fired at officers, shooting out the back window of his auto.

Police officers were seen carrying children from the scene of the shooting while terrified shoppers escaped the Trader Joe's store through a side window and down a ladder.

Police in Los Angeles are responding to a shooting at a Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake area, according to KCBS.

Some people inside the supermarket climbed out windows, and others barricaded themselves in rooms as scores of police officers and firefighters and 18 ambulances converged on the scene and prepared for mass casualties. During the chase, the suspect shot "multiple rounds" at officers, though no officers were struck by the gunfire, he said.

The suspect did not have a mobile phone, but called his family from the Trader Joe's to find out how his grandmother was, Egland said.

Officers had tracked the auto using a stolen-vehicle tracking system and tried to stop the man in Hollywood, but he refused to pull over, police said. Later, a man was seen being led away from the store in handcuffs.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said a 20-year-old female patient was transferred to a hospital in fair condition.

Christian Dunlop was on a corner near the store when he saw four people run out.

One woman who was injured was taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to David Ortiz, a fire department spokesman, though it was unclear how she was injured.

Police said SWAT resources were onsite cautioned the public to avoid the area around the store located at the intersection of Hyperion Ave and Griffith Park Boulevard in Silver Lake.

Kohles said he was "scared stiff" as a staff member made him to lay flat on the floor.

"She appeared lifeless", Dunlop said. Atkins allowed some to leave, and other people sneaked out.
