Man with world's longest fingernails gets them cut after 66 years

Longest nails 1

Now 82, Mr Chillal, from Pune, India, chose to cut his nails when a NY museum promised to "maintain them very nicely and for a lifetime".

"It was a very hard decision for me to cut my nails, but when I realised after cutting them they'd be at Ripley's Believe it or Not, and the museum is going to maintain them ... then I felt like I was making the right decision, and that's when I chose to cut my nails".

Shridhar Chillal, an octogenarian with the world's longest fingernails measuring over 9 metres, finally cut his coiled appendages after 66 years at a ceremony in NY.

Mr Chillal was officially recognised in 2014 by the Guinness World Records as the person with the longest fingernails ever on a single hand.

"Ripley's is privileged to display this truly unique and one-of-a-kind exhibit". He had chose to grow his nails when he was beaten up by his school teacher for breaking the teacher's long nail. Odditorium in Times Square.

There were other reasons why Chillal was willing to cut away an important part of his life: The collective weight of the nails has made it impossible for Chillal to open his hand from a closed position or flex his fingers. The Guinness World Record holder is now finally said goodbye to his nails in an emotional farewell. "With every heart beat all five fingers, my wrist, elbow and shoulder are hurting a lot and at the tip of the nail there's a burning sensation always". The doctor who performed the removal ultimately relied on a handheld power grinder to get the job done, in a process that took about twenty minutes.

The nails, however, eventually became a burden for the 88-year-old man, whose left hand is permanently handicapped.

He told HuffPost India back in 2016 that he had difficulty moving thanks to his mighty claws.
