May reveals Trump Brexit advice: Sue the EU, don’t negotiate

Prime Minister Theresa May said that during Trump's tumultuous visit to the United Kingdom, he told her that instead of negotiating to leave the European Union, she should sue the bloc instead.

Speaking in the grounds of the Prime Minister's official country residence of Chequers, the US President said: "I think she found it maybe too brutal - and that's ok, I can see that - I gave her a suggestion, not advice". She told the BBC Andrew Marr Show that Mr Davis had not been cut out of the negotiations that had been taking place. "Actually, no, we're going into negotiations with them".

She said: "Interestingly, what the President also said at that press conference was "don't walk away, don't walk away from the negotiations because then you're stuck".

She added she was yet to see a workable alternative future trading arrangement that would deliver on the commitments to Northern Ireland, preserve the constitutional integrity of Britain and deliver on the result of the referendum.

May today tried to sell the white paper to MPs, saying to the BBC that "the common rulebook enables us to strike trade deals around the world".

Trump's interview came after two of May's Cabinet ministers, Brexit secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, abruptly resigned over opposition to her plan for withdrawing the U.K from the EU.

Mr Davis also accused the Prime Minister's allies of "crude pressure play" in a warning ahead of the crunch Cabinet meeting on Brexit at Chequers that any ministers who quit would be immediately stripped of their ministerial auto and forced to order a taxi home.

The comments shocked many in Britain - even May's opponents.

The Prime Minister admitted that the white paper was prompted by a need to compromise with the European Union following her earlier Mansion House speech, but asked MPs to "come together behind our plan", in an article in the Mail on Sunday.

In addition to criticizing May's handling of Brexit negotiations, Trump has gone after many of his European NATO allies for relying on the US for trade and defence spending, and called the EU a trade "foe" in an interview with CBS on Saturday.

Trump told reporters on Friday that he had given May advice about how to deal with the European Union that she found too "brutal".

The convention-shredding president, who had already attracted ire ahead of his four-day visit to Britain by rebuking Prime Minister Theresa May as she struggles over Brexit, met the Queen on Friday at Windsor Castle.

"My message to the country this weekend is simple: we need to keep our eyes on the prize", May wrote on Facebook.

While he played down the prospect of an immediate leadership challenge, he expressed concern that May is "a Remainer who has remained a Remainer".

As you can imagine, more people are reading The Jerusalem Post than ever before.
