Multivitamins do not promote cardiovascular health

Multivitamins do not promote cardiovascular health

The study involved more than 2 million participants who had an average follow-up period of 12 years.

Despite these findings, about one-third of all people in the US use multivitamin and mineral supplements, with the global nutritional supplement industry expected to reach $278 billion by 2024, according the to American Heart Association. That is especially true of supplement users living in Europe and Japan. During the research process, Kim and his team followed the National Institutes of Health definition of multivitamin - a dietary supplement comprising more than three vitamin and mineral ingredients.

"It has been exceptionally hard to convince people, including nutritional researchers, to acknowledge that multivitamin and mineral supplements don't prevent cardiovascular diseases", says Joonseok Kim, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and lead author on the study.

The study analysed information from several million subjects across five countries and researcher found that taking multivitamin pills did not prevent users from suffering heart attacks, strokes or death from heart disease.

This, despite the fact that prior studies have "consistently demonstrated no benefit" from supplements when it comes to heart health, Fonarow said. One of the reasons for this is that they believe it can improve their health and lower the risk of developing health problems including cardiovascular disease.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

But Americans have been stubbornly slow in accepting that message.

Instead, "multivitamins fill nutrient gaps [and] are not meant to prevent cardiovascular disease", read a statement issued by the trade group, the Washington DC-based Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), today.

The group also says that multivitamins help low-income Americans combat insufficient nutrient levels for less than a dime a day. Research has linked vitamin E supplements to an increased risk of prostate cancer, for example.

Kim says it has been hard to convince people, including nutritional researchers, to acknowledge that multivitamin and mineral supplements do not prevent cardiovascular diseases.

"You might be prescribed a vitamin or mineral supplement by a health professional for other reasons, but we do not recommend people take multivitamins to help prevent heart and circulatory diseases which this review supports".

The lack of benefit was observed across subgroups and adjusted analyses, Joonseok Kim, MD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and colleagues reported in the July issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. Have you noticed a difference?
