Netflix’s Fast.com now displays upload speed and latency

Whether it be on a new device, after a router upgrade or while diagnosing nbn issues, testing your internet speed is something we'll all likely need to do at some point.

Netflix's internet speed test tool called FAST.com is getting a major update two years after its launch.

On FAST.com, after generating a speed test, you can click "show more info" to view your latency and upload speed results, plus more settings to tweak your parallel connections, test duration, whether you want to measure loaded latency during upload, or always show all metrics. Just go to the site, and the speed test runs (without ads).

Download speed measures how fast data travels from the internet to your device, and upload speed measures how fast data travels from your device to the internet. The app will measure latency on both an unloaded basis (no other traffic on a user's network) and a loaded basis (data heavy apps are being employed on the network). In fact, usage of FAST.com has doubled over the past seven months, and the site has now generated more than half a billion speed tests from around the world Now, FAST.com is adding two new features to its site: the ability to measure latency and upload speed. The loaded latency measures the round-trip time when data-centric applications are being used on the network. Latency, on the other hand, is something you may not have heard of if you're not a techie.

Since internet service providers tend to optimize their connection to work well with popular speed test services, the FAST.com makes a unique offering.
