NFL Supplemental Draft: Giants draft CB Sam Beal

Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal could be a player selected in the 2018 Supplemental Draft

The question on Beal is his strength, according to one scout familiar with the prospect. With three defensive backs potentially getting selected in Wednesday's draft, teams will have the chance to add a legitimate Day 1 starter in the middle of July - something that nearly never happens. He had issues with marijuana in college and after multiple things declared for the supplemental draft.

Beal played well as a junior in 2017, earning All-MAC second-team honors and picked off eventual Jets first-round QB Sam Darnold - whom the Giants passed on - among Beal's two INTs.

The order for the supplemental draft is determined by a unique process.

The supplemental draft will take place on Wednesday at 11 AM MT, with a predetermined order that is not known by the teams. If they had drafted him in the third round, they would have lost a third-round pick in next spring's NFL Draft. The Chiefs could add a prized corner in Beal and still have a full draft class in 2019. The quarterback whose pass he intercepted was Sam Darnold, the third overall selection of the 2018 draft. He entered the supplemental draft after being ruled academically ineligible for what would have been his senior season.

No player has been selected by any team since 2015, when the Rams took Clemson offensive lineman Isaiah Battle.

The draft itself will start at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday and won't last very long. He has starts at both left and right cornerback.

Washington acquired Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander with a sixth-round bid.

For instance, one of the most notable and successful guys in recent memory is Josh Gordon. He's a better prospect than Darius Phillips, the other WMU CB who went in Round 5 to the Bengals this year.

Alexander is a willing run defender, and at his size he can compete on the perimeter. On the downside, Brooks noted the defensive back's game is still a work in progress and that he needs to "refine his footwork" and improve his movement when not running in a straight line. He can get grabby in the deep part of the field as well. A team that drafts him is banking on what he could be down the road. He's a big kid with solid physical tools but is more of an athlete than a football player at this stage of his development. If he's selected, I guess that it will be in the later stages.

Alexander, on the other hand, may need to switch from corner to safety in the NFL. Beal stands 6-foot-1 but has a lean build at 178 pounds.

But with Reese now gone and the more ambitious Dave Gettleman having taken over, the Giants once again dipped into the supplemental draft pool.

The Houston Texans cornerback cupboard is barer than it has been in a long time. The Colts are looking at 6 selections in the first 4 rounds next April, so it wouldn't be as crippling to make a "high risk, high reward" move on a player like Alexander or Beal.

It appears the price tag for Beal will be extremely high. It's possible Gutekunst will hope to find more help in the secondary. He's done a little bit of everything, even if it was all man coverage. The tools are there for him to be a starting corner at the next level. Jones proved a year ago that he has a lot of talent and can take on a featured role in Green Bay's offense.
