Putin Proposed Eastern Ukraine Referendum to Trump, Bloomberg Reports

Vladimir Putin's soccer ball gift to Donald Trump

Trump mentioned Coats by name in his Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, then sided with Putin's "powerful" denial of election meddling over Coats' admonition that Russia interfered and there were warning lights flashing red.

Less than a third of Americans approve of how President Donald Trump handled his summit Monday in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but nearly 70 percent of Republicans think he did a good job, a new poll found.

The spectacle of the Helskini news conference Monday was dominated by Trump's suggestion that he doubts the US intelligence consensus that the Russian government intervened in the 2016 election to help him win the White House.

"Look, the fact is we got along well", he told CNBC in an interview that was recorded on Thursday.

"The composite image, by visual artist Nancy Burson, is meant to represent this particular moment in US foreign policy, following the pair's recent meeting in Helsinki, Finland", Time magazine writes.

The Kremlin has the final say, but hasn't responded yet to the proposal Mr. Trump made Thursday.

The announcement of a second summit comes as United States officials have been mum on what, if anything, the two leaders agreed to in Helsinki during their more than two-hour one-on-one meeting, in which only translators were present.

Trump listed on Twitter the topics he and Putin talked about, but has not given details.

'Coats has gone rogue, ' a White House official told the Washington Post.

The White House's silence over what agreements were made between President Trump and President Putin in Helsinki has handed the initiative to Russian Federation, which is wasting little time trying to nail down specifics.

The Kremlin had said in April that the president had invited the Russian leader to the White House when they spoke by telephone in March.

This time they came from the White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders who claimed that when the President said "no" he was declining to take further questions, not disagreeing with his own intelligence chiefs. She had said on Wednesday the proposal was being considered. It was the first summit between a Russian and American leader since July 2009, when Barack Obama and Putin failed to rekindle US-Russian relations.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it sent detailed proposals to Washington on organizing the return of more than 1.7 million refugees to Syria after agreements reached by Putin and Trump, RIA news agency said. The offer was unequivocally rejected by the State Department and later opposed in a nonbinding resolution passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate.

"The active advancement in this direction has been helped by the agreements reached by the presidents of Russian Federation and the United States during the summit in Helsinki", Mikhail Mizintsev, a ministry official, was quoted as saying by TASS, the country's news agency. He did not spell out what they were.

Trump has called the summit "a great success", but he has been vague about what he discussed with Putin. The official did not specify if that meant Russia's interference in United States elections.

Putin has denied any such meddling.

"I don't know what happened in that meeting", Coats said during an interview at the Aspen Ideas Festival.

"That DNI Coats was surprised, and his fanciful reaction, is what is most alarming to people", the source said. "What should we do?"

"The warning signs are there", he said.

Putin echoed Trump's sentiment, saying: "There was no solid reason behind the current tensions between our two countries".
