Roger Federer out of Wimbledon 2018 after Kevin Anderson defeat

Roger Federer walks onto court

After four hours of hard play on Tuesday at the grass courts of Wimbledon's All England Lawn Tennis and Racquet Club, the Swiss tennis superstar and championship mainstay fell in a dramatic five-set game against South Africa's Kevin Anderson.

The eight-time champion was two sets up and had a match point in the third, but nearly three hours later he trudged off on the end of a seismic 2-6 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 upset.

Federer had a match point at 5-4 in the third set, but struck a backhand into the net before the eighth-seeded Anderson broke in the following game and held serve.

Anderson ultimately prevailed 13-11 in the fifth, but Federer says that took him completely by surprise following serene progress to the quarter-finals without dropping a set.

He ended the match with a serve down the middle that. "I kept saying that today was going to be my day, because you really need that mindset taking the court against somebody like Roger", Anderson said. Now I feel horribly worn out and just bad. Even when he managed to do that in the second game of the second set, Federer recovered to break back and take it to a tiebreak, which the No. 1 seed won. I don't know if it had something to do with the breeze, just a bad day from my side, except the first set. 'I don't know. Sometimes you feel better, and you still try your best.

Roger Federer's Wimbledon win streak came to a shocking halt Wednesday.

Soon enough, Djokovic was on his way to the semi-finals, where he will meet Rafael Nadal.

"I was very happy that I got off to the right start of the match, was able to take control somewhat of the game".

This was also Anderson's first appearance in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, becoming the first South African man to do so since Wayne Ferreira reached the last eight in 1994. However, he fell once, this time in a 7-6 tiebreaker, to fall behind two sets to none. He got what he needed when he had to. I had my chances and blew them.

"I think I had my chances, so it's disappointing".

The three-time champion spoke to Serbian media after his straight sets victory over Khachanov and revealed he has put in a request to play on Centre Court, having played there only once in this year's tournament. All credit to Anderson, he hung in there and somehow won the third. "He's one of the most complex players I've seen in our sport". I wouldn't call it unfinished business.

"By the end I thought I did a great job not thinking about what was happening". He's struggled to maintain top form in recent years due to injuries and saw his play drop off for a while against Kei Nishikori in the quarters, but this is the best tennis he's played this year.
