Russian officers accused of hacking Democrats, indicted in election interference probe

Mueller indicts 12 Russian intelligence officers over 2016 election interference

The allegation was part of new charges Rosenstein announced against 12 Russian intelligence officers for hacking offenses during the 2016 presidential election.

The Russians were accused of hacking into the computer networks of the Democratic National Committee and the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Mueller and a team of prosecutors have been working since May 2017 to determine if any Trump associates conspired with Russian Federation to interfere in the election.

He also said the Russian defendants infiltrated computers at USA state boards of election and secretaries of state, plus software suppliers whose products help election officials verify voter registration data.

The groups created the online personas DC Leaks and Guccifer 2.0 used to release the stolen emails, claiming that DC Leaks was a group of American hackers and Guccifer 2.0 was a lone hacker, but Rosenstein said both actually worked for Russian intelligence.

Prior to Friday's announcement, Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential campaign has led to indictments or guilty pleas for at least 20 individuals and three companies. "It's important for the president to know what evidence we have of foreign interference".

Rosenstein's announcement took place just ahead of a planned meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in Helsinki. On Feb. 16, his prosecutors charged 13 Russians and three Russian entities they said were part of a broader effort to sow discord among USA voters through social media - which they used to impersonate Americans, coordinate with unwitting US activists and even plan rallies.

"It is a stunning set of indictments and clearly indicates that a lot of what the president and his administration have said about the hacks on Hillary Clinton's campaign and the DNC simply was not true", Tapper added.

The fresh indictments related to special counsel Robert Mueller's probe come amid U.S. President Donald Trump's United Kingdom visit, and just hours after he once again called the investigation a "witch hunt".
