Sporting world in shock over young Olympian's stabbing death

Olympic medalist Denis Ten killed during robbery in Almaty

Denis Ten, a Kazakh figure skater of Korean descent, has been stabbed to death at age 25, a Kazakhstan news agency reported Thursday.

Authorities in Kazakhstan said today a man has been detained and confessed to killing the Olympic figure skating medalist Denis Ten.

Ten also won silver at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championship and took bronze at the same tournament in 2015.

Ten, a native of Kazakhstan, was reportedly attacked and stabbed by two unknown men trying to steal mirrors from his auto, according to Russian news agency TASS.

"The International Skating Union is deeply saddened by the news from media in Kazakhstan announcing the passing of Figure Skater Denis Ten", the organization tweeted out.

Kazakhstan's Sports and Culture Minister Arystanbek Mukhamediuly called Ten's death an "irreparable loss" for the country. A warm personality and a charming man. "Such a tragedy to lose him at such a young age", International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said.
