Sprint Introduces ‘Unlimited Plus’ and ‘Unlimited Basic’ Plans

Nicki Minaj poses backstage with future during the Meadows Music and Arts Festival- Day 2 at Citi Field

The carriers have been increasingly stretching the definition of an unlimited data plan - once a single, simple all-you-can-eat option - into something with a myriad of different adds-ons from hot spot capability to freebies like Hulu or AT&T Watch. Specifically, Sprint introduced a new top-tier unlimited plan that's more expensive than its current offering, as well as a "basic" plan that costs roughly the same as the carrier's Unlimited Freedom plan.

The renamed Unlimited Basic plan is still $60 a month. Besides unlimited talk, text and data, Unlimited Basic bundles in the Hulu streaming service and lets you use 5GB of LTE data when you're roaming in Canada and Mexico. Also, you can only stream videos up to 480p and music up to 500kbps. This plan also includes subscriptions to Hulu and TIDAL at no additional cost. Sign up today to get wireless news and updates delivered to your inbox and read on the go. If there's any consolation to this price shuffling, it's that LTE data throttling when you're connected to a congested cell tower will happen after 50GB instead of 23GB.

In other words, Sprint is raising the price of its current unlimited plan by $10, throwing in a few more features, and hoping you won't notice.

The first line costs $70 per month with the second tacking on an extra $50.

With the headway the T-Mobile-Sprint merger is making, one wonders why Sprint doesn't just call it a day and coast along until the deal is approved. This is similar to its rivals' unlimited plans. Global roaming for text and data is free for 185 destinations - travelers to Canada and Mexico will get unlimited talk, text and data with up to 5GB of LTE speeds. For an unspecified limited time, customers who bring their own phone or buy a phone outright will get $20 knocked off each line per month. It costs $70 for one line, rising to $180 for four lines. If you travel overseas to Canada or Mexico, you'll get unlimited talk and text, and 5GB of high-speed data.

Sprint says families will be able to mix and match its new unlimited plans, opting for either Basic or Plus on different lines. The latest carrier to muddy the unlimited data waters is Sprint.

Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Basis will become available for subscribers beginning Friday, July 13.
