Supreme jockeying ahead of Donald Trump’s prime-time reveal of court pick

President Donald Trump has decided on his Supreme Court nominee, a person with knowledge of the situation revealed Monday, hours before a prime-time TV announcement that will ignite a fierce confirmation battle.

While the president has been pondering his choice, his aides have been preparing for what is expected to be a tough confirmation fight.

News crews set up in front of the U.S. Supreme Court early Monday morning in Washington.

The Judicial Crisis Network (JCN), whose leaders pushed Justice Neil Gorsuch over the finish line a year ago, are getting their war chests ready. Dick Durbin once called the "Forrest Gump of Republican politics", later served as partner at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis in Washington, DC, and served as senior associate counsel, associate counsel, assistant to the president, and staff secretary to former President George W. Bush.

Trump is said to have particularly liked Hardiman's life story.

The high court handed Trump and his administration a series of victories in its term that ended on the day of Kennedy's retirement, including a major decision upholding the president's travel ban targeting people from several Muslim-majority countries. He left office as the number two in his party's Senate leadership, a position now held by Republican GOP Sen.

Trump past year appointed Neil Gorsuch, who has already become one of the most conservative justices, after Senate Republicans in 2016 refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy left by the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

Barrett spent much of her career as a law professor at the University of Notre Dame and has served as a judge for eight months, which gives her the least experience of any of the potential nominees.

Over the weekend, Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, reportedly told Trump that Kethledge and Hardiman likely face the fewest obstacles in the confirmation process. As an appeals court judge, Kethledge authored several notable opinions, including one that upheld the death penalty against a suspect who murdered a woman on federal land and a case in OH that questioned whether private citizens can sue the state for failing to enforce pollution controls. Eastern announcement from the East Room of the White House.

Penny Nance, president, and CEO of Concerned Women for America, said in a statement, "Judge Brett Kavanaugh is abundantly qualified to sit on the bench of the United States Supreme Court".

Those views could have implications for independent counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of President Trump.

As promised, Trump made his pick from a list of more than two dozen potential nominees drawn up with the help from conservative legal activists at The Federalist Society and The Heritage Foundation.

Kyl will be guiding the nominee on Capitol Hill and introducing them to Senators as part of his duties, but Trump has not yet indicated who he will ultimately pick. It's the same court that produced three current high court justices.

As a result, Trump found more than twice as many judicial vacancies waiting for him when he entered the White House as Obama did. Even though he previously wrote against a woman's right to have an abortion in a case, he has never issued any public opinion on whether or not Roe v. Wade is settled law.

"I think we can confirm any of the four names being mentioned", Blunt said on NBC's 'Meet the Press.' "They're good judges". Another former Kennedy clerk, Kethledge is known for his strong defense of the Second Amendment.
