Tesla hits 200,000 cars, meaning a lower tax credit for EV buyers

The whistleblower told the SEC about Tesla infractions

At the end of June, Tesla, as well as GM, was said to be very close to hitting the 200,000 US delivery cap. This was followed by an encouraging trend displayed by Bloomberg's Model 3 production tracker, which now forecasts that Tesla would be able to sustain its "burst" production rate of 5,000 vehicles per week for the next three weeks. So far, the company is only building high-end versions of the Model 3 for significantly higher prices. The milestone has been viewed as integral to CEO Elon Musk's Silicon Valley auto concern as it fights against new competition and makes a major stride into the mass market with its new sedan.

Musk said faulty robots and "naive" designers contributed to Tesla's production problems. But the company struggled to increase automation and production capacity at the same time after launching its Model 3 sedan.

Now, Tesla's production process includes areas that are completely automated, areas where employees work with no automation at all, and areas where humans and robots work together, he told Bloomberg.

"It's like you just took all the highways away from L.A. or something", Musk told Bloomberg, adding that Tesla's workers had to scramble to manually assemble auto components.

Musk also said that some of the company's designers were "naive" about the manufacturing difficulties they would face and that the company's plans for increased automation made sense in theory but were hard to implement. (TSLA) finally met its production goal for 5,000 Model 3's per week in the last week of the June quarter after a series of production setbacks and missed targets. "But it will not be the same level of strain as getting to volume production of Model 3".

Tesla has delivered 200,000 vehicles in the United States, exceeding the threshold above which federal tax credits for EVs start to phase out, a spokesperson for Tesla said on Thursday-and its website has updated its incentives schedule.

With more than 400,000 customers holding deposits on the Tesla Model 3, many of those customers will likely not receive any federal tax credit.
