Thai boys were passed 'sleeping' through cave, says rescue diver

They were castoffs from school teams. Now the Wild Boars soccer squad is the talk of Thailand — and the world

He said his wife grew up with Samarn Poonan, the former Thai navy SEAL who died during the mission. "Thank you so much to everyone that has been praying for us and the boys and helping us; thank you".

The world was gripped after 12 schoolboys and their football coach were saved by divers after being trapped underground for 17 days.

He said the children hadn't eaten any food in the nine days before they were found, and drank murky water from inside the cave, which saved them.

The boys and their coach remain quarantined at Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital in northern Chiang Rai province, while they recover from a variety of minor ailments, Thai officials said at a news conference Wednesday.

Each of the boys lost weight while stranded in the cave and will be kept in Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital for a week before going home, a public health official said. "My job was to transfer them along".

"From our assessment, they are in good condition and not stressed".

Doctors, divers and other rescuers were posted along the twisting corridors monitoring the boys as they were passed through using a system of ropes, pulleys and rubber piping.

Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong, a health department inspector, earlier told reporters one from the last group rescued on Tuesday had a lung infection and they were all given vaccinations for rabies and tetanus.

Rescue chief Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters today that the entire operation would not have been possible without the unique skills that Harris brought to the mission, though he did not elaborate.

"We're just very happy that the boys are out and safe", he said.

Isn't that wonderful? The Thai rescue mission has taught us one thing.

The extensive search-and-rescue operation, which included more than 1,000 people from various nations, has now switched to a treatment process.

A large rescue operation got under way on Sunday, with divers extracting the team in batches of four and five over the course of three days.

Each boy was accompanied underwater by two divers carrying their oxygen tanks for them, and guiding them through the murky tunnels.

The soccer team went for regular explorations of the cave. They were carried by stretcher in the compartments that hadn't flooded.

"The presence and support of someone who has had a shared experience of an extreme event will help them deal with the "normal" life waiting for them", Dunham explained.

The boys were eventually rescued, along with their coach, and now Hollywood wants in on the incredible story.

Duangduen Sittiwongsa, a classmate of 16-year-old Pheeraphat "Night" Sompiengjai, whose birthday fell on the same day the team entered the cave, said they would give him cake when he came back to school.
