Theresa May aims to boost US-UK relations during Donald Trump visit

POLITICS Trump

LONDONPresident Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump touch down in London on Thursday for a working visit, and while his meeting schedule will keep him nearly exclusively outside of the capital, she will be spending some time in town.

The largest demonstration is expected in central London on Friday where a giant "Trump baby" balloon will fly close to Parliament after being given the go-ahead by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

He also said he might speak to Boris Johnson, who quit as foreign secretary over May's plans for a business-friendly Brexit which was only agreed by her cabinet last Friday after two years of wrangling.

He said: 'I am going to a pretty hot spot right now with a lot of resignations'.

Protests are expected against Trump, whose policies - including a travel ban on a number of predominantly Muslim countries, detention of child migrants on the US-Mexico border and imposition of tariffs on European Union steel and aluminium exports - have all been criticised by the UK.

During a press conference before departing the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit for the U.K., Trump was asked how he feels about the planned protests.

Donald Trump has said that British people like him a lot because of his views on immigration, ahead of his first official visit to the UK.

"This week we have an opportunity to deepen this unique trading relationship and begin discussions about how we will forge a strengthened, ambitious and future-proof trade partnership".

The reason: demonstrations are planned against President Donald Trump, in London, as well as Windsor, Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds, Cambridge, Cardiff, Glasgow and the west coast of Scotland, where Trump has a golf course. "I'm very strong on immigration".

He said: "The UK loves me, in fact my mother was from the UK, they love me there even if they are not treating us well with trades, but they will".

A campaign is also underway to get "American Idiot", a 2004 song by the USA punk rock band Green Day, to the top of the UK Singles Chart.

Immediately after arriving in London, Trump and his wife will attend a black-tie dinner in Oxfordshire hosted by Prime Minister Theresa May.

On Friday, he will visit off-camera a British military base and will have a working lunch at Chequers with the Prime Minister, where a number of issue including trade and Brexit will be discussed. After the visit, Trump will decamp to Finland for a one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16.

Along with trade and security links, Downing Street said key areas to be discussed between the two leaders included Russia, Brexit and the Middle East.
