Tiger Tracker: Follow Tiger Woods' progress at the British Open

Tiger Woods has mixed bag and another 71 at British Open

You have to go all the way back to the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines to find Woods's last major victory, and it was a barn burner.

Overnight co-leader Zach Johnson gave up a shot early at the British Open when his drive at the fourth found a hazard, but he bounced back by holing what will nearly certainly be the putt of the week at the par-5 sixth hole.

Another American Kevin Chappell (67) is two shots off the lead with Italy's Francesco Molinari (65) on six under alone in fifth. "That was big for me, just to not finish on two bogeys in the last three holes, [after] playing as well as I did", he said.

On a day when Woods electrified the gallery with a 66 that pulled the 14-major victor within four strokes of the lead, Spieth, with three majors already, showed again that he is the man to beat of the next generation.

"It was meant to be what I normally get, and instead he went a little shorter".

The document said Woods then failed four field sobriety tests, saying he was on four prescription drugs.

"That was good, that was good", he said, with just a touch of relief.

Three-time Claret Jug victor Woods, who missed the previous two Opens with back issues, added: "That was good".

For the last eight years personal issues and back problems have forced Woods' golf career onto the back burner.

If Spieth was satisfied with his day, Woods was positively delighted to put himself within striking distance in his quest to end a decade-long major drought.

Woods, playing at his first British Open since 2015, rolled back the clocks on Saturday with a sizzling 66, his best round at an Open since winning at a similarly parched Hoylake in 2006.

And on Sunday he'll be more than happy to take the hat off for all to see if it means he's won his second straight Open.

Three players - including defending champion Jordan Spieth - are tied at the top of the leaderboard at 9-under par. He was six-under after scoring a birdie on the 14th hole.

Woods was also 24 when he collected his fourth major in 2000, while Jack Nicklaus and Rory McIlroy were 25 when they reached the mark. He got within about a foot and ended up with par on the hole.

McIlroy is right when he says he has more experience and Major success than the competitors above him with only Woods obtaining more Major wins than him.

Greller told him no. Play short and it's a wedge to a front pin, easy birdie chance.

Spieth is the reigning champion of the event and certainly is in prime position to reclaim the Claret Jug this year with a solid performance Sunday. His lag putts in particular excelled, and he said, "I hit so many good putts out there today".

It may be immortalized in countless photos if Spieth can continue his good play at Carnoustie. It's the closest he's been to the lead in a major since five years ago at Muirfield.
