Tropical Storm Beryl speeding toward eastern Caribbean

LIAT continues to monitor Tropical Storm Beryl which is currently moving towards the Lesser Antilles

It has been a mostly stationary storm so far, sustaining maximum wind speeds close to 45 miles per hour, but is expected to remain "well offshore" of the USA coast. They expect Chris to become a hurricane by mid-week with additional strengthening forecast afterward.

Chris was upgraded from a tropical depression to a tropical storm on Sunday.

Tropical Storm Chris, which continues to linger off the North Carolina coast, is expected to become a hurricane on Monday.

What's left off Beryl is racing towards the island of Dominica and will produce heavy rains and tropical storm force winds to the island as a Tropical Storm Watch remains up for the island. While Tropical Storm Chris is not expected to directly impact land over the next few days, rough surf and unsafe rip currents will continue to impact coastal areas of the Carolinas, mid-Atlantic and the Northeast through much of this week.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, Chris remained stationary and was not expected to move in the next few days. Tropical storms can have winds reaching 73 miles per hour.

Chris, the third storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, was named Sunday morning as it gained strength off the coast of the Carolinas. As a result, it is forecast to continue generating life-threatening waves and rip currents for the Mid-Atlantic beaches. The remnants are moving toward the west-northwest at 26 miles per hour (42 km/h). Beryl has weakened significantly, meteorologists said, and tropical storm watches have been lifted for Martinique, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Saba, St. Maarten and St. Eustatius.

Tropical Storm Beryl is moving rapidly westward toward the Lesser Antilles at the eastern entrance of the Caribbean Sea.

The forecast predicts two to three inches of rain through Tuesday for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands.

About 7,000 houses and businesses in Puerto Rico still lack power after Hurricane Maria leveled an electricity grid that was ill-maintained before the storm.
