Tropical Storm Chris to strengthen; Beryl weakens to remnants

Storm watch

As Chris continues to strengthen, Tropical Storm Beryl is dispersing as it "races" towards the Leeward Islands in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A state of emergency was in effect, the statement said.

A third named Atlantic storm that formed off the North Carolina coast early on Sunday was forecast to become a hurricane on Monday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, while Tropical Storm Beryl looked set to threaten Puerto Rico.

The National Hurricane Center will still be watching this area of showers and thunderstorms as there is a 30% it could redevelop into a tropical system once it moves over the warmer waters near the Bahamas and the upper level wind shear relaxes later this week. It wasn't projected to directly threaten land over the next few days, though forecasters said it could kick up unsafe surf and rip tides.

"We can't take chances with weather", Jeffrey Xavier, manager of Mr. "There was a lot of buying". "They're the ones who are suffering the most now".

Gradual weakening is anticipated during the next 36 hours, and Beryl is forecast to degenerate into a trough of low pressure as it moves across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea by Monday.

Although Beryl has lost strength and is expected to gradually weaken, forecasters said it will produce strong winds and heavy rainfall across the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola through Tuesday.

The storm was traveling west-northwest at 26 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, meteorologists said Sunday evening.

As of Sunday evening, Chris was about 180 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph.

Although Chris is likely to remain offshore of the U.S. East Coast, it will still bring impacts for beachgoers.

Beryl is likely to result in rain accumulations of 2 to 3 inches in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and amounts in some areas could reach 5 inches.

There were no coastal storm watches or warnings issued early Sunday and the storm was expected to meander off the Carolinas for the next few days.
