Trump holds Putin responsible for election meddling

The White House said on Wednesday it is entertaining a proposal raised by Russian President Vladimir Putin to interrogate Americans in exchange for assistance in the ongoing U.S. investigation into election interference, putting the White House at odds with the State Department.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., told reporters Tuesday that Russian Federation "did meddle with our elections", and said he would consider further sanctions against Moscow.

The interview comes after Trump's meeting with Putin in Helsinki on Monday and his shifting statements on whether he agrees with the findings of US intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election. "When we reviewed the IC we also believed there were some mistakes made by the IC", Ryan said.

"What I find absolutely remarkable ... is they'd had 27 hours to figure out, 'How are we going to deal with this?' And you supposedly have the best spin doctors working for the White House", Dori said.

"The record clearly shows that we didn't know his thinking during that time frame".

Trump had made such statements before - questioning the conclusion of Russian meddling - but to do so standing next to Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, at a post-summit press conference, was nearly incomprehensible.

"Putin has been harassing me for a long time", McFaul, who was ambassador to Russian Federation under former President Barack Obama, said on Twitter on Wednesday.

After President Trump's admission that he misspoke at the Helsinki summit, it was President Putin's turn yesterday to confess to a "slip of the tongue".

He added: "Some people hate the fact that I got along well with President Putin of Russian Federation".

In the interview, Trump said he has confidence in the intelligence agencies as they are now constituted - but he had harsh words for several previous senior intelligence officials, including ex-CIA chief John Brennan and James Clapper, a former director of national intelligence. Trump tweeted Wednesday that fallout from Monday's appearance with Putin was impacted by "Trump Derangement Syndrome", suggesting that his critics were going too far in offering critiques.

During the press conference given by the two presidents in the Finnish capital on Monday Mr Putin claimed that Mr Browder, 54, who was born in the U.S., had not paid tax on $1.5 billion he made "illegally" in Russian Federation, and had then contributed $400 million to Hillary Clinton's election campaign.

US intelligence agencies concluded previous year that the Russian government interfered in the 2016 election campaign and sought to tilt the vote in Trump's favor, which Moscow has denied.

"We're going to make sure that Congress does everything it can to protect this country", said Sen. I have tremendous faith in Dan Coats, and if he says that, I would accept that. "I have no confidence in a guy like Brennan - I think he's a total low-life".

Earlier Wednesday, Mr. Trump sparked confusion about where he stands on whether Russian Federation is continuing to target the USA, given Coats' assessment that the threat to America's digital infrastructure is current.

"I'm interpreting what the president said, I'm not reversing it", Sanders said.

McFaul said the White House, by considering the request, was "assigning moral equivalence between a legitimate indictment of Russian intelligence a cockamamie fantasy (from Moscow) with no basis in reality".

White House officials did not elaborate on how Mr Trump came to issue the clarification, but administration aides described being stunned by his initial remarks Monday.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller, investigating Russia's role in the 2016 election, is looking into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation, an allegation the president denies. A lot of people out there.
