Trump meets Theresa May, promptly says Boris Johnson would be ‘great PM’

LEADING ARTICLEJuly 13 2018 12:01am The Times Safety NetAccountable and democratic regulation of social media is long overdue

Trump suggested that May's plan for a "soft Brexit", agreed to by her Cabinet last week, could jeopardise the UK-US trade deal, expected to be negotiated by the two leaders today.

Rumours are swirling in Westminster as to whether backbenchers will push for a confidence vote in their leader with at least one MP, Andrew Bridgen, stating he had submitted a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister.

The Sun said its interview with Mr Trump was conducted in Brussels before he left for the British leg of his trip.

At its heart is a proposal for a new Britain-EU "free trade area", with interlinked customs regimes, and identical regulations for industrial goods and agri-food.

"When a deal takes so long, they never work out very well", Trump said hours before meeting May for dinner.

Johnson isn't the only politician to have quit over May's Brexit plans, as ministers David Davis and Steve Baker also quit the government in protest.

Britain's finance industry attacked the government on Thursday for ditching its blueprint for trade with the European Union after Brexit, saying this was a blow for Britain's biggest exporter.

Prime Minister Theresa May's government is trying to satisfy Britons who voted for their country to leave the bloc, but to set an independent course without hobbling businesses, security agencies and other sectors that are closely entwined with the EU. "But it is too bad what is going on", he told the tabloid, Britain's best-selling newspaper.

"I would have done it much differently. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me", he said. He said Johnson, May's now ex-foreign secretary, "would be a great prime minister". "It was, I think, a celebration of the very special relationship the United States had".

"I am not pitting one against the other".

Lorraine Johnston, a lawyer at law firm Ashurst, said Britain was proposing a form of equivalence which gives it what looks like a seat at the European regulatory table, even if they can not order from the menu. I think he's done a very bad job on terrorism.

Trump also said that he was "very saddened" to see Johnson was leaving government and said he hoped "he goes back in at some point". I think he is a great representative for your country.

Mr Trump arrived at London Stansted Airport at 2pm on Thursday for his four-day working visit.

Thousands of protesters are set to line the streets to demonstrate against Donald Trump's visit as the US President landed in Britain.

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London".

"I know Londoners are resolutely opposed to the politics of fear and despair".

May has previously admitted that the United Kingdom will have to make financial contributions to the European Union in order to stay in its agencies.

He said London mayor Sadiq Khan, who has allowed protesters to raise a giant diaper-clad balloon mocking the United States president next to parliament on Friday, was doing "a awful job" on crime. Anyone who takes a close look, however, will see that this largely corresponds to an approach that the Swiss government is now trying out. Look at what's going on.

The US president did not have such glowing words for London Mayor Sadiq Khan, however.

Further anger erupted among Opposition MPs when Government chief whip Julian Smith crouched in front of Mr Raab to brief him as Sir Keir was seeking to ask questions on behalf of Labour.

The president also took the opportunity to express his "great love for countries in Europe", but claimed that allowing in refugees fleeing conflict and starvation was causing the continent to lose its culture.

Trump continued, "I think that all of this immigration has really changed the fabric of Europe".
