Trump Says Committed to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as Allies up Spending

"He is not my enemy ... hopefully someday maybe he will be a friend", Mr Trump said.

"I let them know that I was extremely unhappy", he said, adding that it all worked out. Trump: "The additional money that they're willing to put up has been really incredible ... "

Hundreds of demonstrators chanted outside the US ambassador's residence where Trump was staying on the outskirts of London, providing a preview of the forceful protests expected during his two-day British stay.

"It confirms the goal of 2 per cent by 2024".

The emergency session came amid reports that Trump had threatened to leave the alliance if allies didn't immediately up their spending, but officials said no explicit threat was made. Is it heartbreaking? That might be going a little bit far.

That's because, despite the political rhetoric, Trump - like his other 28 allies - signed a summit communique that had been agreed to by their ambassadors last weekend, five days before the summit began.

Trump insisted that he would bring up key subjects including Syria, although he once again failed to rule out recognising Russia's annexation of Crimea.

Trump also told reporters that he plans to ask Putin about the 2016 Russian election meddling during their meeting, which will include a one-on-one discussion between the two leaders.

Asked about his criticism on Germany, and specifically regarding the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russian Federation, he said that Berlin had increased very substantially its commitments, that he had a very good relationship with Chancellor Angela Merkel, and hinted that the gas pipeline shouldn't be an issue if relations with Russian Federation improve. The US is paying for Europe's protection, then loses billions on Trade.

"All NATO Nations must meet their 2% commitment, and that must ultimately go to 4%!" Trump tweeted on Thursday morning before the second day of talks.

Around eight members of the 29-country alliance are expected to reach the 2% target this year.

Trump is due to meet Putin on Monday in Helsinki.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrives in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, to attend the NATO Summit. I dont know if that's what they voted for.

"And frankly maybe everyone is going to have a good relationship with Russian Federation".

Mr Trump has been pressing member countries to spend more on defence, accusing them of passing the burden on to the US.

Though NATO allies have squabbled in the past, Trump seemed to be leaving in his wake not just bruised feelings, but deeper concerns about the future of the Western alliance that has served as a bedrock of the worldwide order.

Trump has described the spending situation as "disproportionate and not fair to the taxpayers of the United States".

When the summit resumed for a session with the leaders of non-members Ukraine and Georgia, Trump failed to appear for almost an hour, officials said.

Trump wants other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states to increase defense spending - and soon.

Woody Johnson, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, dismissed the significance of the protests, telling Fox News that one of the reasons the two countries are so close "is because we have the freedoms that we've all fought for".

'We're going to sit down for a half hour interview. That was just one of several helicopter rides on the agenda for Trump, whose staff opted to keep him largely out of central London and the swarms of demonstrators who are likely to provide some of the defining images of his first official trip to the United Kingdom.

Trump said he wanted "peace all over the world, that's my goal", and he wanted to achieve this by building up the military, with his dream to have the best military equipment in the world and never have to use it.
