Trump touches down in United Kingdom on first official visit as president

One Facebook page advertising a London protest against Trump's first visit to Britain as president has around 60,000 people saying they will attend.

It has been dubbed Storm Trump and the country is braced for a USA presidential visit that has split opinion like never before.

Asked about Trump's comments at a hastily-arranged meeting with journalists, May said she was delivering wishes of the British people.

'I'd like to see them be able to work it out so it could go quickly, ' he said. "But maybe they're taking a little bit of a different route, so I don't know if that's what they voted for", said Trump.

"There is no stronger alliance than that of our special relationship with the U.S. and there will be no alliance more important in the years ahead", May said ahead of the visit.

Mr. Trump, however, suggested before leaving a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels on Thursday to head for London, that Britons in general agree with his policies, in particular his tough stance on immigration.

Top it off with the introduction of trade policies that have targeted some European industries - even though European nations are longtime friends accustomed to easy trade with the USA - and it is not surprising that Trump's itinerary will keep him out of central London on Friday, when large protests are planned.

May's government has recently been shaken following at least three resignations of senior members of her cabinet - including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Minister David Davis, following disagreements on how to exit the EU.

After London, he will travel to Scotland and then onto Helsinki to meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Trump, who has repeatedly praised Brexit, has expressed enthusiasm for a wide-ranging trade deal with Britain after its European Union departure in March next year.

Meanwhile, in the capital city thousands will gather in a various of protests to voice their views against the U.S. president, including a march that could be attended by as many as 50,000 people and a flying protest involving the "Baby Trump" balloon.

The visit is seen as crucial at setting the course for a closer trading relationship between the two countries.

The US president's brash style and hardline "America First" policies have caused consternation across Britain's political spectrum and society.

They are scheduled to spend Thursday night at the US Ambassador's home Winfield House, which is in Regent's Park.

Mr and Mrs Trump will head to Scotland for the weekend, where they aren't expected to be involved in any official commitments.
