Trump visits United Kingdom amid acrimonious relationship with London

Hundreds of thousands are predicted to come on to the streets to demonstrate against a man they described as "dangerous and divisive".

Demonstrators will assemble outside the BBC building in Portland Place at 2pm on Friday and march to Trafalgar Square for a rally. Mr Trump has described the United Kingdom as a place in "turmoil".

Following the departure of senior figures, including foreign minister Boris Johnson and Brexit minister David Davis, the political atmosphere is febrile.

In a press conference this morning, Trump said he is "fine" with the mass protests planned in the country and that Britons like him "a lot". "We are not going to let Donald Trump divide our communities", he said.

President Trump, who will also spend time with the Queen during his stay, said: "I think they like me a lot in the UK".

"The UK loves me, in fact my mother was from the UK, they love me there even if they are not treating us well with trades, but they will", he said.

As well as in London, protests are expected to take place in Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds, Cambridge and Cardiff after Trump arrives on Thursday. After a dinner for business leaders in Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill, he will spent the night in the ambassador's residence in north London. Protesters have been inflating a blimp made to look like a baby version of Trump, and are preparing to fly it over Parliament during his visit.

One such protest will entail a 19-foot-high orange balloon shaped like Trump as a baby, which London Mayor Sadiq Khan - who's feuded with the president - approved under "the right to peaceful protest".

Around the time Melania is visiting children, the giant Trump baby is due to be flying in the air outside the House of Commons, with liftoff scheduled for 9.30am and the inflatable due to fly in the air until 11am.

The antipathy between Mr. Trump and segments of the British public started during the 2016 presidential campaign, when Mr. Trump called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.

Ian Blackford, the Scottish National Party's leader in the Westminster parliament, said he regretted that May's government would roll out the red carpet for Trump.

But it's not simply the protesters, who are expected to dog Mr. Trump throughout his visit, including his weekend in Scotland, but his fraught relationship with political leaders accustomed to harmonious exchanges with USA leaders, a tradition of unity that goes back at least to the vital World War II partnership of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. The issue is 'Do they have freedom to protest, freedom to assemble and should they be allowed to do so?
