Turkey sacks 18,500 staff before expected end of coup emergency

Nearly 9,000 police officials, some 6,000 armed forces personnel and 1,000 civil servants from the justice ministry have been affected by the measure, which Turkish media has dubbed the last state of emergency decree.

Turkish media dubbed the decree as the "last" after officials previously indicated the state of emergency in place since July 2016 could end as early as tomorrow.

Another 1,052 civil servants from the justice ministry and related institutions have also been dismissed, as well as 649 from the gendarmerie and 192 from the coastguard.

Since the state of emergency was declared on July 20, 2017, thousands of officials and academics with alleged close ties with Gulen have been arrested or removed from their posts.

With the declaration of new cabinet, the state of emergency that expires on July 19 should automatically be lifted, according to outgoing Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

Turkey accuses US -based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen and what the authorities call the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) of orchestrating the attempted coup.

Critics said Erdogan is using the extra powers permitted under emergency rule, which have been renewed seven times, to target opponents but the government said they are necessary to remove multiple terror threats inside state institutions.

Mr Erdogan will be sworn in on Monday under a new executive presidency after his outright victory in the June 24 elections.

After two years, many were expecting an announcement lifting Turkey's state of emergency, rather than Sunday's further tightening of the screws.

In addition, the decree states that 148 people, fired by previous decrees, are reinstated in the public administration.

Tens of thousands of people have been arrested in Turkey in an unprecedented crackdown since the failed coup.

Twelve non-governmental organizations, three newspapers and one television station were also shuttered through the 461-page ruling.
