Twitter Bigwigs Who Suffered Massive Loss of Followers After Cleanup

Micro-blogging platform, Twitter, yesterday announced that a fresh round of efforts to purge millions of inactive accounts has kick-started.

Twitter is now clamping down on problem accounts, including all locked accounts.

By 5 p.m., President Trump's @realDonaldTrump account had lost about 300,000 followers, bringing his total down to a still impressive 53.1 million.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's following on Twitter has declined by around 2,70,000 in just a matter of two days following a crackdown by the social media company against fake accounts.

Christian who goes by the username XtianDela lost over 500,000 followers which led him to a drop from over 1 million followers while Nyakundi lost over 400,000.

Across the board, Twitter's most followed celebrities felt a cut on Thursday.

"People having an artificially-inflated follower count made up of bots and redundant accounts is at best deceiving and at worst, fraud".

According to Twitter, the new measures are aimed at improving accuracy in a bid to make the site a "more trusted service for public conversation".

By contrast, former President Barack Obama's count fell by 2.1 million followers, or 2.1 percent, to 101.5 million. The accounts that Twitter was purging today were locked accounts that the company "detected sudden changes in account behaviour" and if the owners didn't validate their accounts, they were henceforth purged.

When the Times story was published, McHenry had 506,478 followers, meaning she's lost almost 56 percent of her Twitter followers since January.

It is these accounts which have been lying locked for a while that are now being removed.

The social site had warned that users with larger follower counts will experience a significant drop it moved to delete invalidated accounts.

"Though the most significant changes are happening in the next few days, follower counts may continue to change more regularly as part of our ongoing work to proactively identify and challenge problematic accounts", Gadde wrote. By Thursday evening, the @POTUS handle had actually gained a number of followers, even though the numbers are still continuing to fluctuate a little here and there.
