Two historic Cape Canaveral launch towers demolished

Cape Canaveral

Two historic launch towers were imploded Thursday to make way for a new private space company at Cape Canaveral.

The demolition of the towers marks the first phase of a contract, which was awarded in September 2016 and involved demolition of the Delta II towers, associated structures, and includes pavements and site restoration. Since then, these two launch towers were unused for more than a decade.

A launch pad that dates back to the early days of the space program was demolished.

In 2004 the first probe to orbit Mercury was also launched from the complex.

Launch Complex 17 had been Cape Canaveral's southernmost launch site, offering spectators close-up views from Port Canaveral and Jetty Park just a few miles to the south.

It was an unusual reaction to destruction on a launch pad.

In the aftermath of today's demolition, 1,700 tons of steel and a couple thousand tons of concrete are waiting to be recycled by a number of contractors, tasked with clearing the area and refitting it for a new objective.

"This is the busiest spaceport in the entire world, right here in Brevard County in Florida".
