USA accuses North Korea of illegally smuggling oil products

It has been one month since President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Singapore and signed a brief four-paragraph document that raised expectations that North Korea might finally be ready to make a strategic decision to abandon its weapons programs and join the global community.

"I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr. President for the improvement of relations between the two countries".

It asked the North Korea sanctions committee to issue an urgent note to all United Nations member states notifying them that North Korea has breached the refined petroleum cap and order an immediate halt to all transfers.

"Denuclearization is something the North Koreans are not focusing on other than being part of a general denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, not unilateral denuclearization", he said, alluding to the North's longstanding demand that the United States also remove its nuclear umbrella over South Korea.

Since the summit in Singapore, there has been increasing scrutiny of the agreement reached by Trump and Kim, with some experts suggesting that North Korea did not really intend to give up its nuclear weapons.

Mr Pompeo has insisted that a raft of tough economic sanctions imposed on North Korea would remain in place until "final, fully verified denuclearisation" occurs. The U.S. Embassy in Seoul said it had no immediate information. But as far as his relationship with North Korea is concerned, it looks like the president believes things are going along just peachy.

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported last week that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo brought two gifts when he met with North Korean officials in Pyongyang: a letter to Kim from Trump, and an Elton John CD with the song "Rocket Man" signed by Trump. North Korea has not yet decommissioned the engine test site despite President Trump's boasting that this has already been done. The U.S. also risks giving the North Koreans leverage to continue diplomacy and drag out disarmament talks.

Kim's letter also predates a planned meeting over the return of U.S. remains on Thursday on the North Korean-South Korean border, where American military officials were stood up by their North Korean counterparts. Earlier Thursday, after attending the NATO summit in Brussels, he told reporters that there were clear signs of progress with North Korea, most notably that no missile and nuclear tests have occurred for nearly nine months.
