Wales appoint Pivac as coach to succeed Gatland

The Welsh Rugby Union has announced that current Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac will take over from Warren Gatland after next year's World Cup.

Gatland will have been in charge for 12 years when he steps down in December 2019, making him the longest-serving Wales coach ever.

He returned to coaching in New Zealand with the Auckland provincial team and was initially appointed assistant Scarlets coach to Simon Easterby in May, 2014.

"We have secured the best man for the job and we have done so rigorously and decisively to the collective benefit of all involved in Welsh rugby", WRU chief executive Martyn Phillips said.

"I will be doing my best to protect the legacy which Warren Gatland, with the help of those players, will inevitably leave behind".

"It's both a huge honour and a privilege to have been asked to be the next Wales coach", said Pivac, whose previous experience at national level is with Fiji from 2004-07. The New Zealander has won three Six Nations championships, including two Grand Slams since taking over in late 2007.

Pivac has enjoyed notable success with the Scarlets, winning the Pro12 in 2017 before reaching the final - and the last four of the European Champions Cup - in 2018.

"The handover process is something we will plan carefully and commence in detail next summer".

Two more Kiwis - Glasgow boss Dave Rennie and Crusaders' Scott Robinson - had been linked with the role.

"To be able to complete the process this far in advance helps the Scarlets, helps Wales and affords me the luxury of time in which to prepare in earnest for one of the biggest jobs in the world game".
