Warsaw backs Trump over Russian pipeline

Freeland Vance Sajjan

The Kremlin says a new prospective natural gas pipeline to Germany will help increase regional stability and strengthen ties between Russian Federation and the West.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada has significant concerns over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would bring gas from Russian Federation to the Baltic coast of Germany. According to Trump, after the installation of this gas pipeline, Germany will get about 70% of its energy resources from Russian Federation.

But more than half of United States exports go to just three countries - Mexico, South Korea, and China - and the European Commission says less than one percent of Europe's gas come from America.

This is not the first time Trump has bashed Germany over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. "Germany is totally controlled by Russian Federation, because they will be getting from 60 to 70% of their energy from Russian Federation and a new pipeline", Trump quipped.

"The United States does not support pipelines such as Nord Stream 2 and a multi-line Turk Stream that will only increase reliance on a single source of supply", Perry told reporters.

"The project continues to progress as planned", Sass said, stressing that Nord Stream-2 is a commercial investment by six leading energy companies from five different European countries. In August 2016, Biden decried Russia's use of its energy resources as a weapon to influence other countries and called the North Stream 2 pipeline a "fundamentally bad deal" for the continent.

"We're protecting Germany, we're protecting France, we're protecting all these countries (via Nato)".

Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic has informed the U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry about the proposal of the EC for correcting the EU gas directive in connection with the discussions on Nord Stream 2. On Wednesday, Trump criticized Germany for being what he called a captive of Russian energy.

"As has been proven in the past, a trilateral process is the most effective platform to seek a satisfactory solution to the gas matters important for involved parties and to gas transit via Ukraine beyond 2019", Šefčovič said.
