We Happy Few will be sold in Australia after all

The core loop of the game is to resist taking the drug and fight the oppression.

"We Happy Few" is an upcoming first-person survival adventure game that explores the dystopian city of Wellington Wells. So yeah, turns out the initial ban was all about the title's use of Joy - a government prescribed drug used to control the in-game population. The Classification Board's report had determined that the usage of the chemical "Joy" in-game was "incentivizing" drug use. It will also officially launch on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on August 10.

Initially, the classification board argued that due to the reasons listed above, the game's systems incentivise drug use and therefore decided not to issue a rating. Last week, however, the Classification Board announced that it would reconsider the ruling, and today it revealed that the appeal has been successful.

No content had to be modified so We Happy Few could be released in Australia, so players in that region won't have to experience a neutered or censored version of the game. "We want to thank everybody who got involved in the discussion, contacted the board and sent us countless messages of support". You can pre-purchase We Happy Few on the Microsoft Store for the Xbox One or the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 4. He added that the studio could have done more to make sure it provided the right context for the drug-related scenarios in the game when submitting it for classification.

GameSpot has reached out to Compulsion in an attempt to get more details about this situation.
