White House now says Trump 'disagrees' with Putin suggestion to interrogate Americans

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin merge in Time's latest cover image

"I don't want to get into whether or not he's lying", Trump told CBS.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday blamed political forces within the US for attempting to undermine his summit with President Donald Trump in Helsinki, while the American leader called the meeting "a great success" and looked forward to seeing him again.

The individuals are related to Russia's case against the financier Bill Browder, a fierce Putin critic who was instrumental in the USA imposing sanctions in 2012 on top Russian officials accused of corruption.

That didn't explain why Trump, who had tweeted a half-dozen times and sat for two television interviews since the Putin news conference, waited so long to correct his remarks.

"It is a proposal made in sincerity by President Putin, but President Trump disagrees with it", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he holds Russian President Vladimir Putin personally responsible for Russia's meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election. Those previous comments, delivered alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit press conference Monday, had prompted blistering, bipartisan criticism at home. "He needs to be contained, not engaged", Browder said.

Previously, Trump was forced to walk back his Helsinki statements, where he was asked about the Kremlin's alleged interference and replied by saying that Putin "just said it's not Russian Federation".

The US president later claimed to have misspoken and said he accepted the US intelligence community's conclusion of Moscow's interference.

Mr Putin made the comments in a speech to Russian diplomats in Moscow after holding a summit in Helsinki with Mr Trump that has ignited a political firestorm in the US.

If Trump's appearances over the past two days were meant to quell the outcry, however, his assertion that Russian Federation is no longer targeting the U.S. did not help. Trump adds that "We are doing MUCH better than any other country!"

When asked if Russian Federation was continuing to target the US, Trump shook his head and said "No". They would rather go to war than see this.

The magazine also tweeted an animated version of the cover, which shows the transition from the US president to Russian Prime Minister. Putin said United States intelligence officers helped Browder.

US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told a congressional committee in February that he already had seen evidence Russian Federation was targeting US elections in November, when Republican control of the House of Representatives and Senate is at stake, plus a host of positions in state governments.

Trump has come under widespread domestic criticism about the meeting. Lindsey Graham, a confidant of Trump's, said on Twitter that there was "A BIG discrepancy between President Trump's statement and DNI Coates' warning", and expressed disagreement with Trump, saying, "My personal view: the Russians are at (it) again".

Hermitage Capital CEO Bill Browder speaks on tense relations with Russian Federation and crony capitalism.

Trump has refined and sharpened his presentation since Helsinki.

Hours later, the White House stepped in to say Trump's answer wasn't what it appeared.

In the CBS interview, Trump asserted he was leading a hard-line policy on Russian Federation.

"We certainly believe we are taking steps so they can not do it again", Sanders said.

USA prosecutors have offered mounting evidence concerning Russian election meddling. "Today, the digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack". A similar House vote Tuesday failed on a party-line vote.
