Cuba began providing Internet access on mobile phones for a narrow circle of users, said on Tuesday, July 17 Reuters.
Reuters says that Cuba's current Soviet-era constitution only recognises state, cooperative, farmer, personal and joint venture property, but former President Raul Castro's market reforms, "aimed at trying to boost the economy and make Cuban socialism more sustainable, have prompted hundreds of thousands of Cubans to join the ranks of the island's self-employed since 2010, in new privately owned businesses ranging from restaurants to beauty salons".
This, he said, should help economic growth and help the Cuban people defend their revolution.
"It's been a radical change,"said state journalist Yuris Norido, according to Reuters". He further adds that the facility has further added to his convenience as now he can update the live status of the news.
All 5 million of its cellphone customers will have internet on their smartphone by the end of 2018, ETECSA said. As compared to the wider internet, Cuba's intranet with selected government-approved sites and email is much cheaper to access.
The aim of the Cuban government to connect 60% of phones and at least half of homes by 2020 was clear as it was revealed in a leaked document that contained Cuba's internet strategy back in 2015.
ETECSA President Mayra Arevich informed the government-approved media in December that it had just connected 11,000 homes previous year. Still, Cubans are skeptical. "But they tell us they still aren't ready and will call us".
Most mobile phone owners have smartphones, although Cuba is only now installing 3G technology, even as most of Latin America has moved onto 4G, with 5G in its final testing phase.
Perhaps, the biggest obstacle to achieving the country's goal of making mobile internet available to Cubans is price.
The new prosperity, often funded with capital from Cuban emigres overseas, prompted resentment and complaints from the hundreds of thousands of Cubans who still live on state salaries averaging $30 a month. ETECSA is charging companies and embassies $45 a month for four gigabytes.
