Woman celebrating anniversary in Mexico killed by stray bullet

Tatiana Mirutenko

Hoover and Mirutenko were celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary with three other couples and were trying to dine at as many Michelin-star restaurants as possible, reported CNN affiliate WLS in Chicago, where the woman's family lives.

A California woman was killed by a stray bullet while celebrating her first wedding anniversary in an upscale neighborhood in Mexico City. Mexican authorities say gunmen on a motorcycle were aiming at a bouncer at a nearby bar when one of their bullets struck Mirutenko in the head.

Investigators have surveillance footage of the gunmen, which shows them fleeing toward Mexico state, the statement said.

The 27-year-old, who was born in McHenry and grew up in Hawthorn Woods, was killed Saturday in Mexico City in an apparent drive-by shooting in Lomas de Chapultepec, a wealthy neighborhood in the Mexican capital.

"She would give 200 percent", said Natalie.

Friends and family are now mourning the sudden loss of Ms Mirutenko, who will be flown back to the U.S. for a burial in Chicago.

"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", the Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a statement.

"As a mother, we always say things, but she inspired me to be better", recalled Natalie Mirutenko, Tatiana's mother, in an interview with Bay Area News Group media partner KGO-TV. "A year ago, we were selecting flowers for the wedding".

Tatiana worked as a senior investor relations analyst at Nektar Therapeutics and also played Division I volleyball at Clemson University. "The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is providing all appropriate consular services to her family". San Francisco's Nektar Therapeutics, where Mirutenko reportedly worked, released a statement that said "Tatiana was a bright and passionate rising star".

The U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory in March warning travelers to Mexico City to exercise increased caution due to crime. "She was always willing to help on any project across the company and had an incredibly strong work ethic".

Earlier this year, the State Department rolled out a new tiered travel advisory system to warn US citizens of potential dangers while traveling overseas.

Her younger sister, Roma Mirutenko, said she greatly admired Tatiana.
