Woman dies after company cuts off power to her home

Linda Daniels died Thursday after the terminally-ill patient’s power was turned off

A 68-year-old woman in Newark, New Jersey, died after the power was cut to her home Thursday, shutting down the electric-powered oxygen tank she needed to breathe, according to the Associated Press.

Daniels, who required oxygen to manage her congestive heart-failure, quickly used up a backup tank as her loved-ones begged PSE&G to reinstate their power.

Linda Daniels relied on an oxygen tank powered by electricity.

PSEG said in a statement that the power was cut from Daniels' home due to "lack of payment over several months". Power was restored Friday, the day after Linda died.

'We were fanning her.

The power was apparently shut off because Linda had fallen behind on payments.

According to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, consumers must be notified in writing of a discontinuation of service ten days before the cancellation.

Police are investigating and PSEG said it would review its records. "As part of our investigation, we are in the process of gathering all appropriate information in order to determine how this could have occurred".

Elderly hospice patient only survived for seven hours struggling to breathe in deadly heat after utility company cut off her electricity.

According to Accuweather.com, the temperature in Newark was in the 90s on Thursday afternoon. She died at 4:23 p.m. of heart failure, her family said. PSEG said 'we're on our way.' They kept telling us that, but no one showed up.

He said he planned to meet with the family Tuesday. "And I don't want it to happen to anyone else".

Bills issued to Ms Daniels show at May 29 her account was about $2400 in arrears, but the family claims it was attempting to pay off the account, ABC 13 reported.

Namiotka said the family had not notified the utility company about medical issues until after the service had been disconnected. A utility also "may not shut-off residential service" if a "valid medical emergency exists" in the household.

But Washington says $500 was paid to the utility two days before the power was shut off. PSEG did not say whether they received that payment. Linda Daniels lived on Shepard Avenue in Newark.

"It definitely was known to them", Washington said.

In a statement provided to INSIDER, PSE&G disputed that account. She said that the family paid $500 toward her balance, more than the minimum owed, on Tuesday to keep the power on.

Washington alleges the power company said someone was on the way, but no one ever came.

"She was trying to catch her breath - she was gasping for air", said her granddaughter, Mia, 28.
