Woolworths recalls frozen rice mix amid listeria concerns

Food firm with King's Lynn factory recalls products over listeria contamination fear

A food company with a factory in Lynn has recalled dozens of frozen vegetable products amid fears they may be contaminated.

While cooking destroys the listeria bacteria, Woolworths's caution is unsurprising after a devastating outbreak of listeriosis in SA in 2017 claimed 191 lives.

Sweetcorn is the number one suspect food that needs to be eliminated, but frozen beans, peas, mixed veg and peppers are also on the danger list.

Woolworths has recalled its frozen savoury rice mix following a listeria outbreak alert in Europe.

Listeriosis is a bacterial disease caused by listeria.

It is found widely in the environment, but is particularly risky for pregnant women and their unborn babies, and can cause death in people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms in humans include gastroenteritis and flu-like symptoms.

Consumers are urged not to eat the products and to return to the place of purchase for a refund.

According to the European Food Safety Authority, the outbreak has been ongoing since 2015 and has also affected Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden.

"The mix is uncooked and frozen so requires cooking before consumption".

Today's recall comes four months after a national listeria outbreak linked to tainted rockmelon killed an elderly Victorian person and left 15 gravely ill.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand have recalled nine products - a mix of corn, carrot, pea and broccoli ranges - that originated from Britain, Belgium and Hungary. National distribution, all stock.

IGA - Black & Gold Mixed Vegetables 1kg: Carrots, peas, beans & corn - National distribution.

ALDI: Market Fare Mixed Vegetables 1kg.

ALDI: Only products with country of origin of Belgium, United Kingdom or Hungary, all other countries not affected.
