300 injured after pier collapses into sea at music festival

Dozens of young music fans were injured in northwest Spain when part of a pier collapsed during a concert.

The broadcaster Radio Galega said 266 people were hurt at O Marisquiño festival in Vigo.

Vigo's mayor Abel Caballero said the platform that collapsed just before midnight was 30 metres long and 10 metres wide.

"We were jumping when we heard the sound and we saw everything collapsing", one woman told state broadcaster RTVE. "Everything indicates that no one is trapped underneath".

According to eyewitnesses, the wooden platform gave way during the first song of the concert as Rels B, who had just started his performance, told the crowd to jump, local media report.

The president of Vigo's Port Authority said he thought the structure, built in the 1990s, collapsed due to "excess weight, to overcapacity".

Five people were seriously injured, but police said there were no known fatalities.

He added: "They hit me in the head, then a container fell, I tried to get out, someone helped me, I think". I was trying to get out and skidded, my foot got stuck, in the water.

Most suffered light injuries, mainly bruises.

The incident happened as revellers were enjoying the O Marisquino festival in Vigo, northwestern Spain.

The annual festival, which bills itself as the "most important urban sports event in southern Europe", draws some 160,000 people to Vigo, a city of around 300,000 residents.
