Annual Perseid Meteor Shower This Weekend To Be Spectacular

As many as 100 meteors, or shooting stars, can be seen per hour during the shower's peak between Saturday and Monday. "The moon will be near new moon, it will be a crescent, which means it will set before the Perseid show gets underway after midnight", NASA's Bill Cooke told Space.com.

Earth is now passing through the path of Comet Swift-Tuttle and the best meteor shower of the year will happen this weekend as a result.

Where to look? Look to the North-NE and find the constellation Perseus and most meteorites will appear to come from the top of this constellation. Observers in mid-northern latitudes will have the best views.

With the rate of 60-70 per hour, you can expect to see about one meteor per minute - so the longer you stay out, the more you will see. "You can look anywhere you want to - even directly overhead". Best viewing time will be after 2 am.

You won't need any special equipment to catch the shower, either. It is unclear what the weather will be like during this night, but if the skies are clear stargazers will be in for a treat.

For the best viewing, get yourself to a dark area. The meteor shower can be seen until August 24, according to NASA. Go to the suburbs or the countryside away from the city lights.

At best, a typical Perseid meteor shower produces 80 to a few hundred meteors per hour.

Comet Swift-Tuttle is the largest object known to repeatedly pass by Earth.

Those bits of cosmic dust fall into our atmosphere, creating the bright streaks we see as meteors in the night sky.

Earthsky's Bruce McClure said "it should be an awesome year to watch the Perseids!"
