Apple says it's monitoring Infowars app

It’s not a ‘defense’ of Alex Jones to argue that we’re on a slippery slope of internet censorship

The two agreed that users should mute or block accounts that offend them ― though people who feel victimized by Infowars conspiracy theories would likely remind them that Alex Jones' followers have been known to terrorize his targets. YouTube recently removed Alex Jones' and InfoWars' channels, but similarly to Apple, the InfoWars app remains available in the Google Play Store.

"If we succumb and simply react to outside pressure, rather than straightforward principles we enforce (and evolve) impartially regardless of political viewpoints, we become a service that's constructed by our personal views that can swing in any direction", Jack writes.

Apple will continue to allow the InfoWars mobile app on its App Store even after removing nearly all of the podcast episodes associated with Alex Jones' conspiracy-theory website from its platforms. "And we'll continue to promote a healthy conversational environment by ensuring tweets aren't artificially amplified", Dorsey said in a series of tweets on Tuesday.

He was sued for defamation by families of some of the children killed in that attack, which left 20 children and six adults dead.

Among other claims, Alex Jones (file photo) has called the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting a hoax. When asked about this questionable decision, Facebook's News Feed director John Hegeman stated, "I guess just for being false that doesn't violate the community standards". However, he adds that students should be free to follow whomever they please online without fearing that it will impact their college admissions changes.

The Twitter CEO is no stranger to criticism over his company's mishandling of harassment and hate speech on his service. As CNN points out, "his blog, Infowars.com, has over 3 million American viewers every month and his radio show, which is syndicated on more than 60 stations, is reported to have anywhere between 2 million and 5 million listeners daily".

This response would be bad enough if Twitter didn't ban accounts for far less across seemingly arbitrary lines (which they do).

At the same time, we're learning more and more about how digital platforms were used as tools to spread false information and influence both the 2016 USA presidential election and the UK Brexit referendum.

Twitter has drawn public outcry for not removing Jones' account. Get started by checking out these guidelines and soon you'll find the Care2 community signing up to support you.
