Atletico Madrid reject Man Utd approach for Godin - Simeone key

Kurt Zouma spent last season on loan at Stoke

Any hope that Manchester United would sign Diego Godin on transfer deadline day didn't last very long at all. That much we do know.

The Portuguese is desperately seeking reinforcements for his defence on the eve of the campaign with summer-long interest in Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire failing to result in moves ahead of deadline day.

The failure to lure Godin increases the possibility of United seeing out the transfer window with no further additions to their squad despite Jose Mourinho's revelation earlier this summer that he is two players short of reaching the five-man target he set his club's board in the spring.

Mourinho is said to be keen to add an experienced centre-half to his ranks in time for the new season.

The 32-year old is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the game and has been an integral member of Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid for years now. He has 122 worldwide caps and has scored 8 times for Uruguay. The 32-year old will be the club's captain this season and wants to continue working with them with no intentions to leave.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

Reports have also suggested Godin has a release clause in his Atletico contract worth just £18m.

Signing Godin at this late stage would be incredible business by United, but it is also highly hard.

"I've been told in the past few minutes Godin's agent was actually the one who approached United this week, saying the player was keen to come to Old Trafford and a deal could be done".

United have signed three players this transfer window, Diogo Dalot, Fred, and Lee Grant.
