Australian PM Turnbull survives party leadership challenge

Malcolm Turnbull's survival today against Peter Dutton doesn't mean he will continue as prime minister until the next election.

In a later interview with Sky News, Mr Dutton would not answer direct questions on whether he would challenge again.

Although he lost the vote and will now head to the backbenches, the level of support for Dutton was substantial enough to fuel speculation of an imminent second strike. As with Julia Gillard in 2012, it worked - but won't save him.

Mr Dutton thought he would do a better job than Malcolm Turnbull at leading the LNP to victory at the next election and keeping Bill Shorten "from The Lodge".

"That was not to be today and I understand and I respect the outcome and I fully support the Prime Minister and the Cabinet".

"If we are fighting amongst ourselves, guess what, when the voters go to the election, they'll mark us down as they should", Mr Laundy said.

Asked what Turnbull said after winning, Marino replied: "This was conducted by way of precedent and he thanked his colleagues for their support and will get on with the business now of governing in the interests of all Australians".

Mr Turnbull had declared he had Mr Dutton's "full support".

Turnbull threw all leadership positions in the Liberal Party open early Tuesday, inviting challengers to nominate themselves for party leader.

Malcolm Turnbull staged a second U-turn over climate change in three days yesterday, aimed at saving his job as his Liberal Party slid further behind in the polls.

The prime minister declared the leadership vacant after entering the party room with his deputy Julie Bishop shortly after 9am on Tuesday morning.

Australian politics has developed a reputation for instability.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese said the prime minister should call an election, if he survives the week. That is why it is very important that today the Liberal party room has confirmed our leadership of the party.

Mr Dutton has been in charge of Australia's immigration policy that has resulted in hundreds of New Zealanders living in Australia being deported back has been a source of tension between the two countries home.

Turnbull's backtracks and changes of policy in recent weeks were an attempt to appease disgruntled members of the party's right faction, of which Dutton is a key member.

"If they can't win the centre, they'll lose and lose badly".

On Monday, Mr Turnbull attempted to blunt conflict within the government by abandoning plans to set an emissions reduction target in legislation.

"They want us to know that we should be concentrating on the things that are important to them".

Damian Drum, a lawmaker in The Nationals' party, a junior coalition partner, called on Mr. Abbott to resign from Parliament instead of destabilizing the government. Mr Abbott told reporters outside Parliament House on Monday evening. "And it was a conversion of convenience this morning".
