Baker Mayfield, Saquon Barkley electrify in their preseason debuts

The first episode of HBO's 'Hard Knocks Training Camp with the Cleveland Browns' will premiere on Tuesday night

The Browns might not be counting on too much from Mayfield early on as veteran Tyrod Taylor is Cleveland's starter, but NY expects a huge boost for its offense from the Penn State running back. By the end of his junior season, a panel of Penn State experts said Barkley had surpassed him.

His second, though, put on display some of the qualities the Browns - 20-10 winners over the Giants on Thursday - fell for in drafting the former Oklahoma star first overall in April's draft. His five runs produced 43 yards. Then he bounced it outside and gained the edge on flat-footed Browns CB Damarious Randall. After that, it was easy pickings for Njoku, who ran past Ogletree for an uncontested 36-yard touchdown pass from Tyrod Taylor.

He completed four of 11 passes for 70 yards in the first half. He finished with three catches for 83 yards.

Rashard Higgins and rookie Antonio Callaway will compete for Coleman's spot. Spencer Drago was called for holding, though, setting up third-and-18.

After an uneventful first drive, Mayfield led the Browns on a 14-play, 72-yard drive in the second quarter that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end David Njoku to give Cleveland a 13-3 lead. He continued marching the offense, twice keeping the drive alive with his legs - on third-and-6 and fourth-and-2 - to set up Cleveland with first-and-goal.

It was all so familiar for Sooners fans and novel for Clevelanders. But this is a different year with a lot of different players. The Browns were one of the more active teams in free agency and trades this offseason, not to mention the fact they had two picks in the top four of the 2018 NFL Draft.

It's only one preseason game, but there were plenty of reasons to be hopeful.
