Barcelona fight back to lift first silverware of season

Malcom could make a competitive debut for Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said on Saturday that there would be no restrictions on players from outside the European Union for the Super Cup, despite only three being allowed in squads for league matches. Barcelona defeated Tottenham 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation.

Barcelona won their 13th Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.

Sevilla, under new boss Pablo Machin, were impressive and led after Sarabia received Luis Muriel's pass and placed it past the goalkeeper early on - with a goal eventually awarded following a VAR review.

However, Barcelona struck just before half-time after a free-kick by Messi hit the post before Gerard Pique converted the rebound.

Sevilla played the match, which serves as a curtain raiser for the Spanish league season, in the middle of its playoff to qualify for the Europa League's group phase.

Dembele ended up being the match-winner when his thunderbolt late in the second half found the back of the net, and there was even more drama in the dying minutes, when saw Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved a penalty from Wissam Ben Yedder.

And now, ahead of Sunday's game, Sevilla have said they could withdraw from the final if opponents Barcelona name more than three non-EU players.

The match had endured a controversial build-up when Sevilla threatened to file a complaint against Barcelona if the La Liga champions fielded more than three non-EU players.

New signings Malcom, Arturo Vidal and Arthur will likely be Barca's three non-EU players on Sunday, although Brazilian centre-back Marlon has also travelled with the squad.

The 21-year-old winger was signed in a surprise £36.5 million deal from Bordeaux this summer and was expected to make his official debut against Sevilla.

Philippe Coutinho has recently acquired a Portuguese passport through his wife, which means he is no longer considered a non-EU player.
