Brooks Koepka wins US Open golf by one stroke, successfully defends title

This year four players were under par after round 1 on the par-70 course with an average score of 76.48, whereas in 1986 it was 77.88.

His record-equalling round of 63 will at least provide the cure for ignorance at a US Open marred by American idiots, but it was not enough to rid him of Brooks Koepka.

DJ is the favorite to win at 12-1 after his third-place finish at the U.S. Open on Sunday.

"Overall though I'm very happy".

Miller, in 1973, and Fleetwood are the only players to card a 63 in the tournament's final round. And it had a chance to be so much better. This time however, it wasn't meant to be.

But Tommy Fleetwood has already proved he can perform, having won the European Tour's Race to Dubai last year and finished inside the top five at the US Open for the second year in a row. Fleetwood shot the lowest back nine (31) and lowest round (63).

"And at the end of the day, this is my best result in a Major yet", Tommy said. "So now there's only one I can do from here, and that's win one".

I can't say whether he should have been disqualified by the letter of the rules, but he prevented his ball from going into more trouble and that's cheating.

Brooks Koepka holds up and kisses the Golf Champion Trophy after winning the U.S. Open Golf Championship, Sunday, June 17, 2018, in Southampton, N.Y. Shinnecock Hills had tighter landing areas and tougher greens.

It made for an exciting final round right from the start, with Masters victor Patrick Reed grabbing five birdies in his first seven holes, Matt Fitzpatrick also on the charge and then Koepka coming through.

Still, both players impressed with their play. But it came dangerously close.

"I had a chance to make history and I wouldn't do anything differently", he said.

"No doubt, we would admit there were aspects of this setup that went too far", Davis admitted in a press conference afterwards. It also allowed us in the commentary box to talk about the golf and not the golf course, which is what we always want to do. We missed it with the wind. Once it gets to next week this week is gone, that's the nature of this game, but the Open is a week I will be really looking forward to. Not only is that useful for his state of mind, it is perfectly correct in respect of a US Open where he produced a history-matching round to move within a whisker of glory.

"Then I made some great putts and some great up-and-downs". They are the ultimate tests of golf and it shows you where you are at and what you need to improve. Like anybody, good people make mistakes.

"It was a little emotional for me", odd said.

After bursting on the scene past year with an emphatic 16-under final score at Erin Hills, he won on a Shinnecock Hills Golf Course that many described as "pure carnage" throughout the weekend. Personally, I don't think he should have been played the final round on Sunday, whether DQ'd or voluntarily withdrawn- but there's plenty who also disagree with me.

"He seems to bring it every time it's a US Open".

"To have my name on it twice is pretty incredible, and to go back-to-back is even more extraordinary", Koepka said. "But it was a risk that was the right one".

Last year, Koepka became the fourth Seminole to win a Major, joining Hubert Green, Jeff Sluman and Paul Azinger.

He's still coming off a long injury layoff, a partially torn tendon in his wrist keeping him out of action for months, unable to keep to his maniacal gym routine, unable to avoid a 15-pound weight gain, and uninspired by being stuck watching television all day.

For the tournament, he hit 119 putts (rank 7th), 68% of greens in regulation (4th), 64% of fairways hit (55th) and an average driving distance of 318.30 (2nd). The five-time major champion was not seriously in contention but when he intentionally hit his ball after putting it on the 13th hole, the nature of the event was turned on its head. Lydia Ko shot a 67 to finish third at 18 under.

"I'm not very happy with the way I played or putted", said Woods after Friday's round.
