China, Germany defend business with Iran in face of U.S. threats

He has said the deal "failed to achieve the fundamental objective of blocking all paths to an Iranian nuclear bomb" and did not address Tehran's "malign activities, including its ballistic missile programme and its support for terrorism".

New US sanctions on Iran have taken effect despite pleas from Washington's allies.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned Wednesday that US President Donald Trump's decision to reimpose sanctions on Iran could further destabilize the Middle East and boost radical forces in the region.

"These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level".

"Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States".

The first round of sanctions target the purchase or acquisition of US dollars by the Iranian government.

Iran dismissed a last-minute offer from the Trump administration for talks, saying it could not negotiate while Washington had reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's nuclear program.

Later, Mr Zarif responded on Twitter by writing: "Tantrums & CAPPED TWEETS won't change the fact that the world is sick & exhausted of United States unilateralism".

European countries have also vowed to protect the nuclear deal by continuing to trade with Iran.

The European Union has also unveiled a "blocking statute" meant to mitigate the impact of the U.S. sanctions on European firms doing legitimate business with Iran.

Turkey's Energy Minister Fatih Donmez also said that his country would continue to buy natural gas from Iran.

Also on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said it was hard to imagine new talks with the USA with its erratic decision-making.

"They fear the application of overwhelming American power, and as long as the overwhelming power is credible, they will be cautious in how they'll escalate", he said.

USA officials have said in recent weeks that they aim to pressure countries to stop buying oil from Iran in a bid to force Tehran to halt its nuclear and missile programs and involvement in regional conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

His trip came on the same day that the USA restored sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

"It's pretty clear to us that they were trying to use that exercise to send a message to us that as we approach this period of the sanctions here that they had some capabilities", Votel told reporters at the Pentagon.

Already facing broad economic fallout as their currency implodes, Iranians are wondering how the next phase of the crisis in U.S. relations will play out - and what, exactly, America's long-term strategy is toward their country.
